The Purple Cloud, one of the strangest novels ever, has us follow Adam Jeffson, the last man on Earth, as he wanders a dead world, the sole survivor of a mysterious purple cloud that's wiped out all of humanity. Adam’s loneliness is overwhelming...until he discovers the lovely but independent (thus swanlike) Leda. She becomes a much needed companion, but also a challenge to Adam's self-imposed supremacy over the abandoned Earth. This then transforms the novel into an uneasy battle of wills between our hero and heroine, adding a layer of psychological intensity to an already eerie tale.
