'Joking' aside, Doktor Koller is a mini masterpiece of expressionist portraiture. Because unlike traditional portraits that attempt to flatter, Schiele’s work ambitiously sets out to explain his sitter's inner complexity. And Egon certainly succeeds: his use of angular contours creating an unsettling intimacy, with the Doc virtually becoming one with the background of...books. Always a nice motif.
This t-shirt-like tribute to Schiele’s defiance of artistic convention may be pretty perfect for admirers of modernist art.
