Unlike my own heavy reliance on that laziest of linguistic tricks, alliteration, Woolf's always-poetic prose (as evidenced by this beautiful passage) is unfalteringly fresh.
As is the whole of The Waves. Because this experimental masterpiece absolutely pushes the boundaries of language and storytelling: its six interwoven monologues capturing the ebb and flow of human consciousness in a way that can only be described as genius. Ginny ditches traditional narrative techniques in favor of a see-sawing rhythmic structure, mimicking the ever-changing nature of the sea, and despite each character experiencing their world uniquely, somehow Ginny binds their their voices together into a larger and harmonious whole. Its just short of actual sorcery.
