Seen by some as outdated and irrelevant, we see The Age of Innocence as one mighty literary achievement.
Edith Wharton's ironic title anticipates a book that sets out to shred the Gilded Age...and its perfect embodiment, the icy Mrs Welland. This is a woman who believes that the Old New York social order can be upheld through the suppression of inconvenient emotions. Who believes in enforcing its suffocating customs with an iron grip. Wharton, however, picks at the cracks in this carefully maintained illusion, ever so subtlely exposing Mrs Welland's flawed ideology.
If you too love Edith’s dazzling study of oppression, then this t-shirt's the one for you.
