One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich might be one of the most life-changing books you will ever read.
Solzhenitsyn's description of the effects of the dreaded 'hard' punishments meted out to prisoners in Soviet labor camps is devastating. Few, if any, can ever have put down in words the sheer brutality that humans are capable of in the way that he does here. For ten days in 'the hole' is a descent into an unimaginable state of suffering. The strong return broken, the others simply succumb.
I wear this t-shirt as a reminder to myself: to be humble, to be thankful.
